These are pristine, intact and sealed first generation MREs introduced in 1981 as the replacement for the Meal, Combat Individual (MCI) that had been in service for the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.
These MREs contained the very first retort pouch thermostabilized meals, along with very early freeze dried main meals.
Also the first to contain freeze dried fruit, and the MRE crackers.
The earliest bags were marked with "Not for preflight/inflight use" if the meal contained beans, due to the potential for debilitating and painful gas at altitude.
Expanding gas can restrict blood flow and push against the lungs and diaphragm.
