The Close Combat Assault Ration (CCAR) is a new, lightweight, and compact U.S. military meal designed for high-intensity combat, replacing the First Strike Ration (FSR).

It provides a full day's worth of high-calorie, nutrient-dense food in a smaller package, reducing soldier load by about 39% in volume and 17% in weight compared to the FSR, allowing for more essential gear like ammo and medical supplies.

The CCAR uses advanced food technology like vacuum-microwave drying, requires no heating, and is designed for consumption on the move, supporting up to five days of nutrition without resupply

Key Features of the CCAR

  • Purpose: Designed for use during the first 72 to 120 hours of a conflict where mobility and a reduced logistical burden are critical.

  • Calories: Each single ration pack provides approximately 2,800 kilocalories, which is enough food for one full day of intense activity.

  • Eat-on-the-Move: All components are ready to eat as-is, requiring no water for rehydration and no heating (though entrees are "acceptable" without heat).

  • Shelf Life: Typically 3 years at 80°F, but can last up to 10+ years if stored at 60°F or lower.

  • Packaging: Uses advanced technologies like vacuum microwave drying to reduce the size of components like fruit and cheese while maintaining nutrients
